Waqif hun khoob ishq ke & Dhoond ke laun kahan se: Bahu Begam (1967), MD: Roshan, Lyrics: Sahir Ludhiyanvi, Other Singer(s): Chorus. This was in it and I have loved it ever since.Ģ. We had a cassette collection “Yadon Ki Barat” by HMV, that had many rare songs. This is one of the first songs of the two singers I ever heard. Phir tumhari yaad aayi: Rustam Sohrab (1963), MD: Sajjad Hussain, Lyrics:Qamar Jalalabadi, Other Singer(s): Saadat Khan. Songs with chorus or other lead singer(s):ġ. In case the playback of videos on other sites is disabled, the YouTube links have been provided below them. You may therefore find that many obvious ones are conspicuously absent. To include the range and variety of songs I have selected some known songs and some which were new to me. The second part will be of songs that features only the voices of these two legends. There are also some songs of other genre. I guess most qawwalis (if not all) had these two signers as staple. The first part will consist of songs which have other lead signers or chorus singing along with Mohd. So…I decided to divide this songs list into two parts. How possibly could that much range be compiled in a single list? SO. Some pure duets, some with other singers and/ or a chorus. Till now the list has reached around 60 above songs. So, I took the task to find out just how many songs there were. You can correct me if I am wrong More Songs:īut would 6-7 songs I recalled, or even 10 for the matter would suffice for the post. I have not researched into any data to support it. On a guess the two probably sang the most number of male duets ever. Rafi on the other hand has also been quoted saying that- “ while everybody listens to my songs, I myself listen to Manna Dey.” The respect that they had for the other is also well known. They seem to understand each other so well. The harmony, synchronisation, especially when they sing in unison is superb. The joy, the energy in the voices is unmistakable. It is ever such a delight to listen to the two together. And thus came an idea for this songs post. Indeed, I recollected about 6-7 duets immediately. So often one comes across the songs that these legends sang together. The other thought that popped was just how many songs have Mohd. I mean, he was a musical genius, but surely he must have sang in one voice. First one being that why did the Music Director use four different voices for Taansen. Rafi & Manna Dey- “Sudh Bisar Gayi”. Listening to that and other songs of the movie, two thoughts crossed my mind. One day I was browsing through YouTube and came across songs of Sangeet Samrat Tansen (1962).

I have visited this Shivala complex at Farid Chowk ( which is presently a commercial area) in 2003 and found that the miniscule Kashmiri Pandit population currently living in Amritsar was engaged in a litigation with some greedy shopkeepers who continued to pay a nominal rent of Rs10 or Rs 15/= per month per shop belonging to Shivala Kashmiri Panditan occupied by them since last so many decades. In fact a member from this family namely Kashmiri Lal Mattoo had also donated about one Kanal of land inside walled city of Amritsar ( present location Farid Chowk ) in 1908 AD for construction of a community centre and a Shiva Temple now known as Shivala Kashmiri Panditan. His ancestor Pandit Mehtab Ram Mattoo, a shawl trader, had actually moved to this city from kashmir sometime in later half of nineteenth centaury. He was a renowned musicologist of the country who is known for his two outstanding student Mohammad Rafi and Sitar Maestro Mehmud Mirza. Jiwan Lal Mattoo belonged to a pre- partition family of Kashmiri Pandits settled in Amritsar.
